okay, so today i'm a biter: n. someone who jocks the style of another like packman bites points or ghosts. saw this article on brenden's blog and had a lot of feelings. so worth reading and funny. it's basically a discetion of one facet of the "underground" fashion subculture which i guess is called the hipsters. one quote i really liked:
An amalgamation of its own history, the youth of the West are left with consuming cool rather that creating it. The cultural zeitgeists of the past have always been sparked by furious indignation and are reactionary movements. But the hipster’s self-involved and isolated maintenance does nothing to feed cultural evolution. Western civilization’s well has run dry. The only way to avoid hitting the colossus of societal failure that looms over the horizon is for the kids to abandon this vain existence and start over.
(for the record i tried to tab in 5 spaces to correctly identify this as a quote from another scource over 5 lines but it wouldn't let me so quit hatin!)
i feel like this could be true. but also, i probably wouldn't have seen this article if it had not been in adbusters, which, for whatever reason (blame angelina jolie et. all for making humanitarian issues fashionable) is sold in hipster stores. hum. the world is a complicated place of give and take.
also, what about other types of hipsters? what about psycadelic drugs/sleep depro kids that think they're super far out and operating on astral plane number 5 when they're really quite normal doods and get their drug money from their parents (they think it's for rent)? what about crust punks? what about steam punks? what about art punks? what about neo urban suburbanites? we all pretty dang snobby when you get right down to it.
i think i'm going to blame the internet for this right now. maybe in some small way shining a light on a million different subcultures makes people feel threatened in their own. maybe we all just want to go back to that time in middle school when you had 2 best friends and you did everything together and felt real tight and cool as crap because you all had white bell bottoms and shopped at the thrift store together. i dunno. stuff to think about.
and don't get me wrong, i'm not defending any one group, i just felt this article was a little self-righteous and condeming though it did make good points. let's all take that tip from maino as we mentally digest:
